L'autore:
Robert Hans van Gulik (1910-1967), demonstrated an early gift for languages, achieving fluency in Malay during elementary studies at the Dutch school in. Java, where his father was posted in the colonial administration. By the time of his completion of a doctorate at the University of Utrecht, he had added Chinese, Japanese, Tibetan and Sanskrit in addition to another half dozen Western languages to his linguistic repertoire. His exceptional language skills served as a foundation for one of the most unconventional, and accomplished, careers in Asian scholarship in the twentieth century.

Dr van Gulik was a man of insatiable intellectual energy and curiosity. Personally an accomplished calligrapher, poet and musician, his academic interests were focused on a wide range of esoteric, and previously neglected, topics of Sinology. His scholarly writings included monographs on Tang jurisprudence, Chinese classical music, Chinese connoisseurship, Daoist magic. Sanskrit studies in China and ancient Chinese sexual mores, among other subjects.

Van Gulik's accomplishments in these diverse areas of Sinology were all the more impressive considering that they were achieved while he pursued an active diplomatic career-holding posts up to ambassadorial level in China, 'Japan. Korea; India and Malaya among other locations-and simultaneously became a successful popular novelist. His 16 mystery novels, featuring the semi-historical figure Judge Dee Goong An, were eventually published in several Western and Asian languages, and remain popular reading to the present day.

Descrizione libro Hard bound. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. Third edition. The lute, ch'in or guqin is one of China's oldest and most revered musical instruments. Records indicate that it has been a favourite of the literary classes for more than 2,500 years; Confucius himself was a great lover of the instrument. Over the centuries, it became representative of the life, taste and pastimes of the Chinese literati. In addition to its contributions to solo and orchestral musical arrangements, a wealth of symbolic meaning accrued to the lute over time. Not only was knowledge of the instrument reserved for the literati; its study was believed to be conducive to meditation and to facilitate intellectual enlightenment. While a significant body of literature has been written on the lute in Chinese, the present monograph is the first to assemble a broad picture of the instrument and its cultural significance in English. The author, a renowned Sinologue and linguist, studied the playing of the instrument under one of the most famous lute masters of his age. xx, 290 pp., incl. 1 colour and 38 b&w plates, 8 woodcuts, index. Size: 25 x 18 cm. Codice articolo 001434
