In red cloth, titles in gilt, edges faded very slightly, corners and edges bumped and rubbed. Spine, titles in gilt, edges bumped. DW, in mylar jacket, couple of small marks and chips, titles in black inks, lovely coloured image by Armour to top cover. Internally, some light offsetting to eps, an edition limited to just 230 copies, (xxvi), [1], 2-332, 28 plates, of which 8 are coloured, printed by William Blackwood and Sons, teg remainder uncut. Surtees, was an author whose books ran counter to the currents of his age in their lack of idealism, absence of sentimentality, and almost wilful flouting of conventional moralism. His leading male characters were coarse or shady; his leading ladies dashing and far from virtuous; his outlook on society satiric to the point of cynicism. See ODNB.
