Octavo, softbound (stiff, full-color illus. green wrappers), xviii + 142 pp + [vi] pp. Very Good, with light wear to covers. From lower cover: "Rosy pink, with wing and tail coverts of deeper carmine. The tail tawny orange. It is as though an orchid has spread its lovely wings and flown." Thus as the Roseate Spoonbill been described. But it is a sorry fact that man's persecution once reduced this magnificant species to the verge of extinction throughout tis normal range in the Gulf region of the United States. Now once again in the ascendent thanks to stringent conservation measures, this book has never been more fully described than in this book, originally prepared under the auspices of the National Audubon Society. The author actually lived among the Spoonbills for months at a time in preparing this study. His findings on distribution from the earliest recorded sightings, through the period of low ebb in the 1890s, to the 1930s; on migration and postnuptial wanderings; on natural and unnatural factors that limit the species' increase; on the peculiar breeding cycle behavior (pairing, prenuptial, copulation, nest building, incubation, care of young); on food, feeding habits and ecological relationships; and on plumages and molts are all summarized in this report, now reprinted in full. Supplemented with an appendix listing local and foreign common names for all the Spoonbills and the scientific names of the plants and animals mentioned in the text, a bibliography, and most important, 20 in-the-field photographs of adult and immature specimens, breeding and feeding grounds, nests, etc. and 44 other illustrations, this is the finest concentrated study of the Roseate Spoonbill. As such, it is an important volume for conservationists, research ornithologists, behaviorists, and general nature lovers and bird enthusiasts. Unaltered, unabridged reprint of Research Report #2 of the National Audubon Society. Foreword by John H. Baker. Preface and Introduction by the Author. Appendix. Bibliography. Index. 20 photographs. 44 figures. xviii + 142 pp of text. 6 5/8 x 9 3/8. Ornithology, Natural History, Birds, Birding, Florida, Gulf Coast, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Louisiana. bslic.
