Set in 1900 in Tyrol on the Austiran-Italian border in the Alps, Christopher (Jean Hersholt), a church bell ringer wishes for his sons (Both played by Don Ameche) to take to music and the church as he has. One of his sons, Gabriel, is born deaf and mute, the other, Karl moves to New York City after falling out with his father. During the bombing of WWI Gabriel gains his hearing back, but it isn't until much later in life that he and his father cross paths. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine.

Original aqua and black dust jacket with picture is not price clipped (.95) and has Modern Library catalog listed on the back. Earlier jackets were brown with no picture, just lists of authors. This jacket has no lists on the front cover. The later 1949 jacket reintroduced the lists. General overall wear with slight crumple and loss at spine ends, tips and most edges. Looks spiffy in new plastic cover protector. Not Signed.

With manuscript annotations in ink and blue pencil on the front wrapper and title page, and a single manuscript pencil notation to the verso of page 80. Based on the 1930 novel "Job." Grieved by the death of his wife, an Austrian sexton is abandoned by his eldest son, who goes to America and finds success as an engineer, and abandons his younger son at a monastery upon learning that the child is a deaf-mute. Blue titled wrappers, noted as SHOOTING FINAL on the front wrapper, dated FEB. 28, 1936. Title page present, dated February 28, 1936, noted as SHOOTING FINAL, with credits for novelist Joseph Roth and screenwriter Samuel G. Engel. 138 leaves, with last page of text numbered 136. Mimeograph duplication, rectos only, with blue revision pages throughout, dated variously between 3/20/35 and 3/3/36. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Poor (with usual dryness and chipping common to Fox wrappers of this era) and detached. Pages supple, bound internally with three gold brads.
