Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. xii, 52, xviii, 62 p. : illustrated. 29 cm. ; Bound back-to-back and inverted (tête-bèche format) ; "with an introduction by Dudley Fitts ; and illustrations by Marian Parry -- The frogs / by Aristophanes ; translated from the Greek by William James Hickie ; with an introduction by Gilbert Seldes ; and wood-engravings by John Austen. " ; LC: PA3877; Dewey: 882 ; OCLC: 5069098 ; "John Archibald Austen was an English book illustrator. His early works, including a fine Hamlet, were Beardsleyesque in style, but after 1925 he was influenced by the Art Deco movement. Books which he illustrated in this manner include Daphnis and Chloe and As You Like it. Austen used several techniques in his illustrations, including wood-engraving and scraperboard, and changed styles to suit the text he was illustrating. He was also involved in advertising, producing adverts and several posters. He was a friend of Alan Odle and Harry Clarke and exhibited with them at the St George's Gallery in 1925. It wasn't until 1906 when Austen came to London, as a carpenter, that he was first exposed to Beardsley's work. The effect it had on him was said to be overwhelming and he began to study art - and Beardsley in particular. .[In] 1921 . he had his first illustrations published. The book was The Little Ape and despite being an obvious paean to his hero, the illustrations contain a seed of uniqueness that kept them being slavish copies."--wikipedia ; FINE, in soiled slipcase.
