Prima edizione
4to, pp xxiii, [1], 196, frontispiece and text illustrations from Indian sources throughout, original salmon pink bevel edged cloth, the upper board and spine gilt decorated with complex Buddist design, a little rubbed but bright, edges gilt, minor foxing to prelims only, else a very good clean copy throughout, FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION; from its first appearence in 1879, this translation provided the first popular insight into Gautama Buddist poetry for an English audience; it would continue to be a best-seller for the rest of the century and well into the next. This would be the first of many illustrated versions, here selected by the publisher from sources as fresh and unfamiliar as the text itself. The pictorial binding, in its salmon-pink and gilt, stood out from the English style of the period, and is hard to find in good clean state such as this.
