Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fair. Jacket after John Banting (illustratore). 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Some edge wear, chipping and short closed tears to top and bottom of jacket and spine, lamination lifting along spine side of front and back jacket, extensive use of old brown paper tape to verso jacket, corners bruised, folds rubbed with small loss, some slight overall a yellowing, some red splashes and grubby fingerprints to spine, not price clipped (70s), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a reasonable copy for its age. 639pp, illustrated. Brian Howard was expected to become one of the leading authors of his generation, but instead he became a secondary character in the books of others. Marie-Jaqueline Lancaster's magisterial biography makes him at last the protagonist of his own highly entertaining story. Packed with reminiscences and extracts from Howard's letters and writings, this book details the outrageous parties, stunts, and confrontations that were second nature to this ne'er-do-well. Chronicling 30 years of waste and dereliction, Lancaster captures a gay literary life, the 1920s, modernism, or the mystery of failed artistic promise. From austere libraries in Oxford to seedy hotels in Amsterdam to darkened cinemas in Tangiers, Brian Howard (1905-58), lived and died precociously and most importantly as he pleased. 'Brian Howard, Portrait of a Failure' is the next best thing to an invitation to one of his famous parties. Sadly, Howard committed suicide, after the sudden death of his lover. A scarce book.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. John Banting (Dustwrapper design) (illustratore). Second Edition. Second edition - the book was first published September 1939, with a second impression in November 1939. This second edition, published in 1947, was effectively the third impression, using the same-sized illustrated dustwrapper as the first two impressions, with the dustwrapper marked as third impression to the bottom of the front flap. Dustwrapper designed by John Banting. ***Near fine in light-grey cloth-covered boards with dark red titles to the spine. Pale yellow top edge stain by the publisher to match the colour of the dustwrapper. Boards clean and unmarked. No bumps or tears to the cloth. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. Pages clean with no foxing. No creasing or tears. Slight spine lean but spine tight. ***In a near fine colour-illustrated dustwrapper, with the attractive design by John Banting to the front panel. The dustwrapper has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 7s. 6d. net. The dustwrapper is complete, without any chips or tears - just light edge wear and creasing, and there is some clear tape reinforcing to the reverse of the top edge of the rear panel of the dustwrapper. Back panel very clean. Dustwrapper bright. ***188mm x134mm. 255 pages. ***"Party Going" deals with some young people who are going on a holiday. Fog delays them at the station, and when their train leaves four hours later the book ends. Three of them are in love or think they are. The result is entertaining and something more'. (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***'Henry Green was the pen name of Henry Vincent Yorke (29 Oct 1905 - 13 Dec 1973), an English writer best remembered for the novels "Party Going", "Living" and "Loving". He published a total of nine novels between 1926 and 1952.' ***'Frank Kermode maintained in his essay "The Genesis of Secrecy" that behind the realistic plot of this novel there is a complex web of mythical images, the most important being the figure of the classical Greek god Hermes, which is strongly tied to one of the characters. This led Kermode to consider "Party Going" as a Modernist novel, strongly influenced by the ideas of T.S. Eliot.' (Wiki) ***A beautiful copy of the second edition, or third impression, of "Party Going" by Henry Green. Copies from this period are very hard to find now in the original dustwrappers, which were produced on very thin paper, and especially so in such nice condition. Of interest to collectors of the work of Henry Green and the Hogarth Press. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

First edition; large 8vo; publisher's blue cloth, titles to spine gilt, minor smudge to top of spine, Banting designed dust-jacket, lightly marked, small chip at the top of the spine panel and some associated, short tears, a particularly fresh copy. Banting's remarkable 'blueprints' in his most surrealist mode, pay artistic homage to all manner of earlier, aesthetic tropes. The mode of production being a more or less conscious echo of one of the earliest photographic processes - the cyanotype, whilst the subject matter lies somewhere between the nightmares of Max Ernst and medieval bestiaries. One of the glories of the short-lived publishing house Editions Poetry London with the notoriously vulnerable dust jacket (the present example being considerably better than usual).

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Title-page, 24 full-page and one double-page illustration in blue; cased in blue cloth; yellow decorative dust-jacket with a couple of light chips to spine, generally somewhat soiled. Light spotting to endpapers. A very good copy. "A series of drawings . accompanied by a short text which provides a fantastic, but appropriate comment on the drawings." Originally produced in an edition of ten copies as John Banting's Surrealist satire 'For Social Service' (1933). Banting's text makes it clear that the cyanotypes depict an aristocratic party for socialites: Mrs Thornback (the hostess), Hughie Liskerkin, Valda Prouffington, Lady Pounce, Sir Giles-Mundens-Furnace, Mrs Fuchsia-Stingwing, Colonel Molars, Lady Turquoise Tuckroe and others exchange unintelligible non-sequiturs, argue, flirt, gossip, and bore. 'None of the types in this book are imaginary, but none of the individuals represent any one person. The vistas unfolded are pre-war, war-time and, no doubt, post-war.' (John Banting in his 'Preface and Obituary'.)An important example of English Surrealist book production by the artist John Banting. Banting spent much of his time in France and was extensively influenced by the French Surrealists, including Max Ernst, and their interest in cyanotypes. Banting's "blue-prints" use the cyanotype process to develop his drawings into prints. The prints used in A Blue Book of Conversation were previously published in 1933 in a portfolio entitled For Social Service, limited to 10 copies. Here they are carefully arranged, given accompanying text by Banting and an illustrated title-page. The whole is a mocking satire on the frivolous and often vicious nature of upper class society, reflecting Banting's left-leaning views and political stance against the establishment. The illustrations feature anthropomorphic creatures, with elements of insects, fossils and skulls, taking on the persona of the moneyed classes. Banting's comments that appear next to each illustration centre around a party given by Mrs. Thornback, attended by figures such as Lady Pounce, Mrs. Fuschia Stingwing, Bluster Blage-Carr and Colonel Molars.
