Internally near fine, though binding mildly soiled and edgeworn, with chips at head and tail of spine. First edition, a tight and decent copy of this chronicle of (to cite title page) "The Creation and Dedication of George Grey Barnard's State of Abraham Lincoln, including the address of William Howard Taft." President Taft's kid brother (1843-1929) who footed the bill was a noted lawyer, single-term Congressman and newspaper mogul. Amusing front pastedown custom bookplate of attorney Russell H. Neilson features his pipe-smoking caricature, reclining with feet up and book in lap. MONAGHAN 2289.
