Beaton was the publisher and editor of The Film Spectator and author of "The City That Made Itself" (1914) , about Seattle. He was also a noted critic of his day. Allan Hersholt was the son of Jean Hersholt, namesake for the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award given each year by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Allen was in one movie, Clifford Smith 's "The Adventures of Frank Merriwell" (1936) . The book has two parts: A Plea, which is "a brief for less dialogue in screen productions as the only method of reviving film box-offices before they are talked to death, " and The Play, "a demonstration of the manner in which excessive dialogue can be avoided, a complete screen play written for the camera, containing only 162 speeches which need be recorded. Important history of the city of Seattle by Welford Beaton (1874-?). Beaton was born in Ontario and began his career writing for and editing various local newspapers. A connection with theSeattle Timesbrought him to the city in 1903. This work is well written and copiously illustrated with historic photos of the city. Uncommon in the trade. 4to, 275pp. Photographs. Original green cloth boards, beveled edges, front cover stamped in gilt. Boards rubbed along edges, most notably at corners and spine ends. Clean and sound internally with slightly musty smell. Very good First edition, limited to 300 copies, this copy unnumbered.

Newspaperman Beaton (1874-1951) arrived in Seattle in 1903. His projected photo history of the Denny Regrades became a deeply-researched story of the physical and commercial development of the city. Many of the photos, arranged in decorative settings, present then-and-now views illustrating the rapid development of the city. Clara Bow (1905 - 1965) rose to stardom in the 1920s silent film era best known for her roles in Wings (1927), It (1927), The FleetÕs In (1928), The Wild Party (1929), and Call Her Savage (1932). Rex Bell (1903 - 1962) primarily appeared in Western films and co-starred with Clara Bow in the 1930 movie True to the Navy and they were married the following year. Bell also served as the Lieutenant Governor of Nevada from 1955 - 1962.
