Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. 1940 LIMITED first edition (124 copies; this one not numbered) . Signed and inscribed by author, "To Mr. Fred Krauss, with best wishes for emminent success in your very important field-to our mutual advantage. H. L. Betten. " Original brick red morocco leather binding, approx 6 3/8 x 9 1/8 inches, with stamped gilt borders and hunter shooting at grouse, marbelized endpapers, 450 pp, illustrated with color tipped in plates and in-text drawings by Lynn Bogue Hunt. Separate pack of extra plates NOT present. Leather gone from spine, with front board just barely attached, corners bumped with approx 1/4 inch of cardboard exposed there, and 1/4 to 3/4 inch of the top layer of leather scuffed off. Additional minor scuffing on lower edges of boards and a few stray areas on the faces, and a quarter inch nick side edge of front board. Some dust darkening along gilt top edge of text block, and light tanning other edges. Internally, ribbon missing, first free fep has a 2 inch rub mark along side edge, and a 1/2 inch tear and 1/4 inch rub lower edge. Printing information page (immediately following text) has a jagged 3 inch tear lower gutter, rear hinge cracked. Lower side edge of 1 leaf (pp 93-94) has an approx 2x4 piece of paper torn off, and absent, from lower side edge with loss of text (easily repairable by tipping in a leaf from a trade copy) . 2 dogears, an approx 1 1/2 inch tear top edge 1 leaf (p. 431) , paper lightly age yellowed, with a faint whiff of tobbaco, o/w tight, clean and unmarked. As for the plates, the fpc has a crease line at the upper and lower right corners, and a 1/4 inch nick on the top edge, with an approx 1 inch scrape mark on the paper immediately above it. Plates on pp. 94, 134, 182 & 214 have a crease line lower left corner, that on p. 358 has a few approx 1/32 inch chips along top edge. All said, while not a pristine copy, some relatively easy restoration work will bring this one up to par!.
