Soft cover. Condizione: New. After the attack on the Twin Towers in 2001, US President George W. Bush launched The War on Terror. Ten years later, in 2011, there was no sign of any end to fighting, and twenty years later, in 2021, after foreign troops left Afghanistan, the suffering continues. The concept of a Holy War in Buddhism is the spiritual battle with the mental defilements of greed, ill-will, and delusion. The proximate cause of suffering, according to the teaching of the Buddha, is craving, and the root cause is ignorance. Due to not understanding things as they truly are, we crave for and lust for pleasurable objects, and reject and recoil from unpleasant objects. The only way to reach peace is to fight The War on Error, to remove delusion. If one rightly understands the three characteristics of impermanence, unsatisfactoriness, and not-self, one will become equanimous regarding pleasant and unpleasant objects of the senses. Neither will one cling to views and opinions. If the root cause of ignorance is destroyed, all other mental defilementswill also cease. This book offers some advice on cultivating tolerance, compassion, and wisdom, to live a peaceful life by avoiding conflict, and withdrawing the mind from the inner and outer turmoil caused by wrong-views and wrong-thoughts.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. This long discourse is unlike any other. It is not a single Dhamma talk at one location, but an account of the last year or so of the Buddha s life. This discourse contains the Buddha s final instructions, thus it is very important for the preservation of the Buddha s dispensation. Every Buddhist should know about the important teachings contained in this Sutta. The Sutta begins when the Blessed One was dwelling on Vultures Peak near Rajagaha, it describes his journey to Pataligama, which would become the new capital city of King Ajatasattu of Magadha. There, the Buddha crossed the Ganges with the Sangha by using his psychic powers, and proceeded towards Vesali on the north bank of the Ganges. The Buddha entered the Rains Retreat for the last time near the village of Beluva, accompanied only by Venerable Ananda, while the other monks took up residence for the Rains in the vicinity of Vesali. At the end of the Rains, Mara approached the Buddha and asked him to pass away there and then. The Buddha refused, but announced that his demise would take place in three months. Thereupon there was a great earthquake. The remainder of the discourse describes the Buddha's journey to Kusinara, his last meal, the ordination of his last disciple, Subhadda, and his demise in the Sal grove. Finally, the discourse describes the cremation, the partition of the Buddha s relics, and the building of Ten Pagodas in different regions.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. There are hundreds of translations of the Dhammapada. My edition is based on the translation by Narada Mahathera. Many of the verses are impossible to understand without the context that is given by the Commentary. The Dhammapada Commentary is a lengthy work with stories for each verse, or each group of verses. Many stories include accounts of previous lives, which the Buddha gave to help the monks understand why certain events had occurred. For example, when the blind Arahant Cakkhupala was practising walking meditation, his feet crushed many insects that had come out of the earth due to the rain. They wondered whether he was truly an Arahant if he killed so many living-beings, and also why he had gone blind after striving hard to fulfil the Ascetic Practice of never lying down to sleep, even when advised to do so by his physician who prescribed eye-drops for an eye-disease. The Buddha reassured the monks that he was, indeed, an Arahant, and was destined to go blind sooner or later due to an unwholesome kamma he had done in a previous life.
