Prima edizione
Softcover. xc, 107 p.; 21.5 cm. (Texts and studies ; vol. III, no. 2) Full text of ch. 1-16 in Latin; introduction and notes in English Contents: Preface -- Introduction: 1. the manuscripts, 2.other versions, 3. name of the book, 4. ancient quotations of 4 Esdras(iii-xiv), 5. quotations from the additional chapters, 6. the text of the additional chapters, 7. character of the additional chapters, 8. the two texts of Confessio Esdrae, 9. other apocryphal literature attr. to Ezra, 10. Concluding remarks -- Liber Ezrae quartus [text, with variant readings] p. 1-82 -- Appendices I. 4 Esdras i-ii, xv-xvi: the text of C, with the variants of M; II. 4 Esdras viii.20-36 (1) in the Mazarine MS, (2) in the Lyons MS -- Index of Latin words -- Index of proper names. -- From J. Armitage Robinson's preface: `For many years before his happy discovery of the celebrated `Missing Fragment' [ch. 7.104f., ed. by Bensly from Codex Abulensis, 1875] the late Professor Bensly had been engaged upon the text of this remarkable Book. I have endeavoured to be scrupulously faithful to his latest judgments. A far more serious loss is the absence ofthe introductory matter and of the notes in which he would have discussed the many problems which the Book presents. I accordingly appealed to one who loves the Book, and venerates the great scholar who spent so large a portion of his life upon it, to introduce it in his own way. That the appeal has not been in vain the following pages will shew.' -- From M. R. James's introduction: `The text of the Latin version of the Fourth Book of Esdras, printed in this volume, is in a certain sense an editio princeps. For the first time the book appears in print as a whole, including the long-lost passage in the seventh chapter.' VG, sewn, in orig. azure wrapper, torn along upper edge.

413 x 286 mm. (16 1/4 x 11 1/4"). Double column, 61 lines plus headline in gothic type. Capitals struck with red. One leaf with two 10-line decorative woodcut initials. Goff B-567; BMC II, 526. â Large, but generally light, dampstain to upper outer corner, just touching text, otherwise excellent specimens, clean and crisp. These attractively printed Bible leaves from the first printer in Ulm have notices by Menardus Monachus at the beginning of each chapter, briefly summarizing the contents. Johann Zainer established his press in Ulm in 1473, and printed prolifically--although apparently not profitably--until 1493, when he was forced to leave town because of his debts.
