Publisher's linen cloth, pictorial dustjacket (price-clipped). Near fine. Provenance: the joint book collection of Peter Weiss (1916-1982) & Gunilla Palmstierna-Weiss (1928-2022), neatly stamped in 2023. London, Phaidon, 1968. 4to. 30,3 x 21,5 cms. 248 pp. With 240 illustrations. (Publisher:) "This book discusses and illustrates all Bruegel drawings which were known by 1957. An illustrated appendix registers the very few drawings which came to light between the author's death and the publication of this book. The reproductions in the present volume are very large, the greater part even in the size of the originals. Bruegel's only watercolour is reproduced in facsimile. Münz's full and detailed introductory text deals exclusively with Bruegel's style of drawing, and with the style of his forerunners and his followers. One long and fully illustrated chapter discusses all types of imitations of Bruegel drawings, ascribed at one time or another to the master himself. The critical catalogue of Bruegel's own drawings will be particularly useful to the student. This book is a most valuable contribution to the knowledge of early Netherlandish art and to the understanding of Old Master drawings in general". - - - Second impression.
