Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Wing Commander Tommy Calnan: "Shot down over Brest at the end of 1941 while on an important photo-reconnaisance mission.escaping alone from Spangenburg, or from Stalag Luft III with Robert Kee and with Digby Young.he was a constant embarrassment to the enemy. Contemptuous of official escape committees, he refused to inform them of his plans and even went so far as to organize his own private supply of forged documents from England until, on one occasion, he simply walked out of an escape-proof camp disguised as a Russian soldier." "It is a record of what one ingenious and courageous man can do no matter how heavy the odds." Calnan joined the RAF before he was 18. From 1950 Chief Test Pilot at RAF Farnborough, and command of a Meteor Night-fighter squadron. Calnan left the service in 1958. Dedication: To the memory of my fifty friends and companions at Stalag Luft III who, without trial or sentence, were shot by Himmler's Gestapo after escaping, from the great tunnel on 25 March 1944. Their names should not be forgotten. Original black papered boards, lettered silver on spine. Previous owner signature front free endpaper. Staple hole corner of front free endpaper.
