Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. zviii+238 pages with plates, maps, charts, tables, bibliography and index. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's green cloth with brown lettering to spine in original publisher's pictorial jacket. First edition. The cargos are religious offices occupied on a rotating basis by the men of the community. The incumbents receive no pay; rather, they spend substantial amounts of money in carrying out their duties, in effect exchanging money for social position. It is shown that the social and economic stratification of the community is clearly expressed in the cargo system. The tendency of the cargo system to keep Zinacantan isolated from the Mexican world is analyzed, along with the present and probable future effects of growing population and expanding economic opportunities. Condition: Corners bumped. Jacket: edge wear with some small chips and tears, spine toned else a very good copy in like jacket.

Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. 164-173 pages with tables and bibliography. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Journal of Anthropological Research Volume 30, Number 3 complete issue. First edition. Patterns of participation in the system of religious offices in Zinacantan, Mexico, changed during the 1960s. Data for 1961 show men taking successive offices with similar prestige and cost, thereby clearly marking their rank in the community. Comparable data for 1967 do not show this pattern. The change suggests that the breakdown of the system as the major rank-allocating institution in the community is underway. Analysis of differences between mobile and non-mobile men in 1967 reveals some order in the breakdown process, and illustrates a theory of individual response to social mobility. Condition: Spine sunned, light edge wear, previous owner's name to first page else very good.

Rivista / Giornale Prima edizione
Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. 1068-1075 pages with figures, tables and references cited. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Volume 65, number 5. First edition. The patterning of informant error is used to demonstrate the psychological reality (validity) of 2 prestige scales ranking various offices in the religious hierarchy in the highland Maya community of Zinacantan, Mexico. Most M's of the community take one of the 34 'first level' offices (OF's) in this hierarchy for one yr. Many later serve another yr in one of the 12 'second level' OF's. The OF's involve substantial ceremonial expenditures. Statistical analysis of the careers of 130 S's shows a significant +r between expense of first level and expense of second level. Prestige seemed more important than simple expense. A prestige ranking for each level (11 ranks first level OF; 12 ranks second level OF) was constructed intuitively by combining expense, authority of the OF, & a few idiosyncratic features. Using this scale the tendency toward a consistent career is stronger. Is the prestige scale psychologically real to the natives? In the cases collected for the analysis mentioned above informants disagreed on the OF's served by man individuals. The `errors' were laid out in matrices (11 mean/average 11 & 12 mean/average 12, prestige scales) against the correct OF served. Binomial tests show a significant tendency for the errors to be close to the correct prestige rank. It is postulated that: 'When an informant makes an error that results from lack of precise information, he is most likely to approximate the truth in terms that are meaningful to him.' The postulate is supported by citation of the work of psychologists who have successfully used similar reasoning. It is concluded that the prestige scale approximates psychological reality. Condition: Spine sunned, previous owner's name to front wrapper, corners bumped else very good.
