Libro
Hardcover. Condizione: Good+. No Jacket. Francis James Child (1825?1896) was an American scholar, educator, and folklorist, best known today for his collection of English and Scottish ballads now known as the Child Ballads. Child was Boylston professor of rhetoric and oratory at Harvard University, where he produced influential editions of English poetry. In 1876 he was named Harvard's first Professor of English, a position which allowed him to focus on academic research. It was during this time that he began work on the Child Ballads. The Child Ballads were published in five volumes between 1882 and 1898. That work contained 305 distinct ballards, but Mr. Child's plan in that work was to record every existant version of every ballad. While Child was primarily a literary scholar with little interest in the music of the ballads, his work became a major contribution to the study of English-language folk music. The book for sale is not a 5-in-1 offering, but it is one volume from "The Cambridge Edition of the Poets" series, edited by Bliss Perry. The book for sale was developed and edited from the Child's Ballads by Helen Child Sargent and George Lyman Kittredge and copyrighted in 1904. It may be considered an abridged version. From their preface: "The present volume, it will be observed, is neither a new edition of the collection of Mr. Child nor a substitute for it. It differs from (his) work in scope and purpose. Yet it is, in a manner, complete in itself." The editors used the same numbering and letter designations used in the Child's Ballad so further research by those with further interest can easily find Child's expanded information. Indeed, Mr. Child's own words are retained whenever that was possible. Contents, Notes, Sources of the Texts, Glossary, and Index are consistent with the larger work. xxxi + 730 pp. Interior is tight, clean, with careful markings in text. Names, stamps, prices and libris stickers are on front paste-down and end-papers. In the table of contents, some entries are check marked. Pencil underlining not obscuring printed text may be found throughout. Hardback?s cover has green cloth boards with gold lettering and designs. No DJ. Minor shelf wear, but carefully used and stored with square corners. An abridged version and guide to the complete collection by a scholar of folk arts. ? Size: 8vo ? over 7¾ - 9¾? tall, 761pp. ? Condition: Good Plus Hardcover, no Jacket. Always Privately owned copy. Prior owners? signatures add no value. Very usable copy. Copyright 1904. No edition/print-run info found. Printed in U.S.A. No ISBN, LCCN, nor MSR. Prior Owner Name No Value.
