Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. (no dust jacket) [solid book, light bumping to spine ends and most corners, dust-soiling to top edge, age-toning to other page edges, a couple of very light water-spots on front cover; paper spine label browned but fully intact]. Novel, set largely at a mountaintop observatory in California, about the disruption brought to the life of an iconoclasic astronomer when he is awarded a major international prize in his field. The news sends him into a reverie, in which he flashes back to his childhood and young manhood, in particular his relationship with his best friend (who ended up as a very different sort of "astronomer," hawking peeks through a cheap telescope to passers-by in New York's Union Square); he also spends a certain amount of time in dialogue with his imaginary mentor/conscience, "Dr. Meiklejohn." Fortunately he has his devoted niece/assistant, Lois, to help him through his existential crisis. The author, a native of Pennsylvania, was a frequent contributor to popular magazines and wrote five novels, of which this was the last.
