Two volumes. 8vo. pp. ix, [i], 1030; [iv], 1060-2188. Vol. I. A-K. Vol. II. L-Z. Edited by John Hungerford Pollen. Preface by Henry Cole. Proof-sheets first published in Notes and Queries, 1868-1870, as 4 and 12 page supplements; widely circulated for additions and corrections, which were incorporated in these 'first proofs'. The work was discontinued on account of a lack of funds, and, except for a supplementary volume published in 1877, no further revisions were ever issued; the sections 'Illustrated Bibles and Liturgies', 'Catalogues', 'Periodicals' and 'Societies' which it was proposed to issue separately at the end of the alphabet, remain unpublished. Later black cloth, spines lettered in gilt. Occasional pencil annotations in the text. Vol. I. Final two leaves lack upper corners, hardly affecting the text, title-page repaired. Vol. II. Some edgewear to margins. A very heavy set, please ask shipping costs before ordering, particularly to locations outside Europe.
