This satirical work, and 'Ixion' - both by Disraeli, were first published in 1834 and "it is significant that though he later wrote more profound, more sustained works, never did he write anything more brilliant and witty than 'Ixion' and 'The Infernal Marriage'. The author's father, a learned bibliophile and erudite historian, thought they were his best work, and many a later critic has agreed with that judgement." "Though lions to their enemies - they were lambs to their friends" - The Infernal Marriage. W34 0.0.
