A very good copy of the attractive Thomson-illustrated edition of Reade's popular novel. During her short life, Margaret Woffington (1720-1760) dominated the Georgian Dublin and London stages in comic and cross-dressed roles, with her breeches part as Sir Henry Wilder causing a storm at the Theatre Royal, Dury Lane. Known professionally as Peg, the Irish actor (initially apprenticed to Madame Sovre, a tightrope artist) was professionally, socially and financially canny. She successfully navigated socialite circles and affairs with aristocrats (plus a lengthy one with David Garrick), and never relinquished financial control (by never marrying), allowing her to raise and support her sister Mary and provide a pension for her mother. Reade's original 1853 novel was based on his play Masks and Swags (1852, with Tom Taylor); it spawned various film versions during the silent era.

FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (19 x 12.5 cm). pp. xi + 120. Original publisher's binding of gilt-decorated burgundy cloth. Illustrated frontispiece, 33 full-page plates and 16 vignettes after illustrations by High Thomson. Exlibris Walter Parratt, bookplate to front pastedown endpaper. Austin Dobson (1840-1921) was and English poet, critic, and biographer whose love and knowledge of the 18th century lent a graceful elegance to his poetry and inspired his critical studies. Educated in Strasbourg, France, Dobson became in 1856 a civil servant at the British Board of Trade, where he remained until his retirement in 1901. He began to publish poetry in magazines in 1864, and in the 1870s he played an important part in the revival of intricate medieval French verse forms (the triolet, the rondeau, the ballade, and the villanelle) that became known as the English Parnassian movement. Married in 1868, he lived in the London suburb of Ealing until his death at the age of 81. Britannica.

First edition, first issue, with 'The long day lengthens' in the dedicatory poem and with Beau appearing to be overweight in the illustration facing page 18. Libro Prima edizione
First edition, 8vo, [xvi], 120 pp., with frontispiece and 31 plates, headpieces throughout, partially unopened; publisher's maroon cloth gilt, bevelled edges, top-edge gilt, wood-engraved printed dust-jacket; slightly rubbed at extremities, dust-wrapper lightly chipped, back splitting slightly, otherwise nonetheless a very good copy. A handsomely produced gift book of the 1890s, today collected chiefly as a fine example of the pictorial cloth binding made famous by the Cranford series and for the illustrations by Thomson. This copy with the scarce dust-jacket that has done an admirable job keeping the original cloth and gilt bright beneath.
