Original autograph letter signed by Danish film director Carl Theodore Dreyer to American film critic Elliott Stein discussing the possibilities of a production for a feature film of Medea with a screenplay by Dreyer based on the ancient Greek play by Euripides. Written on Mr. DreyerÕs personal printed stationery measuring 8Ó x 9 1/2Ó. The letter reads in full: ÒCopenhagen, July 30th, Dear Mr. Stein, Thank you for your letter of July 15th. The script for MEDEA will be finished in a fortnight, but a producer has not yet been found, and before this problem has been solved, I cannot promise anything in order not to bind the unknown producer of the film. But I shall at the right time and in the right place mention your request. I owe you a debt of gratitude and I shall personally be happy to repay you. With my luck and best wishes, Sincerely, Carl Th. Dreyer.Ó With the postmarked envelope with Danish stamps addressed to Mr. Stein in Paris. The letter has 2 minor creases from folding, else fine and the envelope is neatly opened. DreyerÕs Medea script was later adapted by Lars von Trier into a television movie which aired in 1988, starring Udo Kier, Kirsten Olsen as Medea, and Henning Jensen as Kreon. Carl Theodore Dreyer (1889 - 1968) is best known for his films The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928), Vampyr (1932), Day of Wrath (1943), Ordet (1955), and Gertrud (1964). Elliott Stein (1928 - 2012) managed a literary review in Paris called ÔJanusÕ, worked with Kenneth Anger on his book ÔHollywood BabylonÕ, and as a film critic in Paris (1960 - 70) for the Financial Times and the Village Voice, and in the 1970s he worked in New York as a film critic for the Village Voice, Film Comment, and Sight and Sound.
