In the Badminton Library series, a sporting project aiming to cover all major sports and pastimes, edited by Henry Somerset.The racing part was written by the Earl of Suffolk and Berkshire and W G Craven, while the steeple-chasing part was written by Arthur Coventry and Alfred E T Watson. With a general history and the development of the two sports, and chapters focused on rules, races, betting, and more.Illustrated in text throughout by John Sturgess.A special copy signed Charles Kemeys-Tynte April 1892, Eton College, and A C James. Tynte was a British aristocrat and Justice of the Peace, son of Halswell Milborne Kemeys-Tynte and 8th Baron Wharton JP. This volume is heavily inscribed to the front free endpaper and its verso, to the imprint page, and the verso of the title page with much information on some horse races. Some interesting entries such as 'On Aug 25 1804 Captain William Flint (White) beat Mrs. Thornton riding side saddle in a dress of buffalo leopard colour, blue sleeves and cap over the Knavsmire. Much unpleasantness followed - Col. Thornton applied in the King Bench for a criminal information against Captain Flint for challenging him to a duel and for horsewhipping him on the race ground at York the summer after the match took place.' In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally sound with minor shelf wear and some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, minor soiling to the boards. Decoraative cloth boards with gitl embossed authors names and vignette of a horses head to the spine. There is a prize presentation bookplate to the front paste down from Wellingboro' Lawn Tennis Tournament, August 5th, 1889 - Gentlemen's Singles Handicap First Prize, Basil L. Thompson. Numerous sketches throughout illustrate the text and a colour frontispiece plate as called for. There are bumps to the head and tail of the spine and three board corners are a little turned in. Slight splitting to the front and rear inner hinges - the boards are firm and tight. Some foxing to the upper fore edges and the rear blank page. There is a short tear of 1 cm to the head of the title page, now expertly repaired and a slight chip adjacent to the tear. Clean and tight. A very good well preserved, bright tight copy.
