Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. First UK edition, first impression. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of classic Gollancz yellow jacket and spine, corners slightly rubbed, very slight lean, not price clipped (£2.00), no inscriptions, internally clean and tight, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 223pp. John Putnam Thatcher of Sloan Guaranty Trust has just been added to the board of the Dreyer Foundation, whose good works are financed by the Dreyer Chocolate Company, makers of the popular Old Glory candy bar. Then one of the contentious leaders of the company is drowned in a motel swimming pool, and Thatcher investigates. 'Emma Lathen' is the pen name of two American businesswomen, economic analyst Mary Jane Latsis (1927-97), and attorney Martha Henissart (b. 1929). As Lathen, they wrote 24 mystery novels starring John Putnam Thatcher, a Wall Street banker. According to Latsis 'We decided on a banker because there is nothing on God?s earth a banker can?t get into'. For each book they determined the basic structure and major characters, then wrote alternate chapters, with Latsis writing the first chapter, and Henissart the last. They would then do a joint rewrite to eliminate inconsistencies or conflicts. The London 'Times' described Lathen as 'a sort of Jane Austen of the detective novel, crisp, detached, mocking, economical'. Quite a scarce book.
