All illustrations bright & intact. Maud Elizabeth Charlesworth (1865?1948) later changed her name to Maud Ballington Booth, was a Salvation Army leader and co-founder of the Volunteers of America. Born in England, she was a sister to bestselling romance novelist, Florence L. Barclay. She married the second son of the founder of the Salvation Army, Ballington Booth in 1886, against her father's wishes. In 1887, she took command of the Salvation Army forces in the United States alongside her husband, Ballington Booth. In 1895, Booth became a naturalized American citizen. However, in 1896, Ballington and Maud left the Salvation Army after a dispute with General William Booth, to co-found the Volunteers of America. Maud was also known for working to improve the conditions of prisons in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This copy is in fragile condition in spite of being carefully stored. Hardcover has tan cloth boards with square corners and little shelf-wear, but no DJ. Grey, black, red, and white illustrations on spine and front, white of girl's dress is fading and has lost chips of paint. Binding is loosening, yet book is complete. Previous owner's name is written on front end page but adds no value. Some pages are smudged from handling. Copyright 1901. Printed in 1901 according to title page. 1st Edition thus assumed. No ISBN nor LCCN. MSR = $1.35 + 0.15 postage. Prior Owner Name No Value.

A collection of improving short stories for the young: "As we place trellis work near the young tendrils of the climbing vines for them to cling to, so should we ever give child-hearts something to love, and the more they reach out to others in tender sympathy, the more will they be linked to that which is sweet and good; unselfish and helpful." (Preface). Inscribed in ink to front free endpaper (presumably in a secretarial hand), "Alexandra Hamilton from the Prince & Princess of Wales, Christmas 1904". The Prince of Wales (1865-1936) later became King George V and his wife, the Princess of Wales (1867-1953), Queen Mary.
