Très remarquable provenance pour ce rare exemplaire bien complet de ses 7 tomes, portant le cachet armorié "Bibliothèque de M. Guizot" avec sa devise "Omnium recta brevissima" (le droit chemin est le plus court). Diplomate et historien, Gaëtan de Flassan (1760-1845) était chef de Cabinet de Talleyrand lors de la parution de cette seconde édition. Il sera nommé historiographe au Ministère des affaires étrangères par Louis XVIII, et participera au Congrès de Vienne. Ainsi que l'auteur l'expose dans son avant-propos, "l'Empereur, n'étant encore que premier Consul, témoigna à une députation de la classe d'histoire de l'Institut, le désir d'un ouvrage qui contint la filiation des actes diplomatiques de la France. Je travaillais dès lors à un ouvrage de ce genre, et l'intention manifesté par l'empereur, fortifiant mon zèle, m'a fait presser avec une nouvelle ardeur, l'exécution de cette entreprise [.]". L'auteur se défie de l'éloquence de l'historien : "l'histoire politique est posée, didactique, graduée. Elle exclut les pensées ardentes, ce qu'on appelle le pittoresque, et les rapprochemens arbitraires qu'on s'efforce de justifier par de l'esprit, parce qu'on ne peut les étayer par de l'esprit et de preuves écrites". Puis il évoque le sujet même de son ouvrage, dans un "Discours préliminaire" : "Chaque nation doit défendre son territoire, son commerce, ses sujets, son honneur. De là résultent nécessairement des relations avec les autres états, et c'est la politique, qui au moyen de la diplomatie est chargée d'entretenir ces relations". L'auteur traite rapidement de la "première période" (des origines de la monarchie au Traité de Brétigny du 8 mai 1360) dans la première moitié du premier tome, puis consacre tout le reste de son travail à la période postérieure. Cette seconde édition est largement corrigée et très augmentée. Bon ensemble (petit mq. en coiffe sup. du tome I, reliures un peu frottées, bon état par ailleurs) de remarquable provenance. François Guizot (1787-1874) avait déjà 24 ans lors de la parution de cette édition, et était bien introduit dans le milieu littéraire parisien. On sait que Guizot a lu l'ouvrage (il en cite notamment des passages de la première édition dans sa Vie de Washington) et en fait l'éloge, parlant d'un "ouvrage qui occupe un rang élevé dans la littérature française".
