Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Original brown cloth with floral stampings in black to front board and spine. Gilt titling remains bright to both front board and spine. Tiny amount of rubbing to board corners. Pages moderately age-browned, but NOT fragile or crumbling. Original floral endpapers; hinges have needed no repair. B&W frontispiece still protected by original tissue guard. Emma Dunham Kelley (later Emma Durham Kelley-Hawkins, 1863-1938), who published her first novel, "Megda" (1891) under the pseudonym "Forget-Me-Not," was long considered a pioneer of African-American women's literature. Her novel was rediscovered by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and served as an inspiration for him to compile the 40-volume Schomburg Library of Nineteenth-Century Black Women Writers in 1988. Recent genealogical research, however, indicates that Kelley-Hawkins was, in fact, white or identified herself as white (see National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Volume 94, No. 1, March 2006.) 394 pp. followed by 6 pp. publisher's ads, including for the Rev. John Alden's "A Pilgrim Family," Mrs. M. Carter's "Beulah Land," and S. Fannie Gerry Wilder's "Boston Girls At Home and Abroad." Here reduced from $150.
