Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. No Dust Jacket. 8vo. pp xxv, 323. Original publisher's blue cloth, lettered gilt at the spine. The publisher's own retained copy with their perforated stamp in the preliminaries reading Ôfile copyÕ and publishing date label on the front pastedown, "26th June 1929." The book is a novelisation of the Cuocolo murder and trial based on the trial records, with a foreword by Walter Littlefield, the New York Times correspondent who had reported on the case. WorldCat notes only this edition, although it was printed in America and appeared there in 1928. Italian-Ameircain Mafia crime novel, seen as the harbinger of the hard-boiled American novel, which Dashiell, Hammett's Red Harvest launched in 1929. Very good indeed.

Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: VG. First edition. xxv, [i], 323pp. Ownership name to front free endpaper. Contents clean throughout. In the original binding of smooth dark cloth, spine titled gilt. The spine is dark, the title slightly rubbed, the boards are clean, but are largely pale as if obscured by clouds, and with a few small marks. The lower corners of both boards have been knocked - the upper, slightly, the lower board, more definitely. There is a little minimal fraying to the joint ends. The plot concerns mafiosi, and the foreword takes the trouble to distance the then-current establishment in Italy from any connection with the Mafia. A scarce title, and a sound copy.
