Hardcover. Condizione: Good+. Third Edition. Good. This is an ex-library book with all the usual markings. Hence the attractive price. The condition is good news, bad news' The good news is that the ivory pages are very clean and bright (with the exception of library stamp #) The bad news is that the exterior is heavily worn at all the edges and spine head and bottom. Exterior is in barely good' condition. Cover is ochre cloth with black top and bottom decorative borders and gilt lettering. There is black lettering on the spine. Tried by Fire is a very important book on the Arts and Crafts movement in America. Frackelton was one of the leaders in the Arts and Crafts movement in the United States known for her salt-glazed stoneware and china painting It includes b&w plates and text illustrations, 12 color plates (including the frontispiece) From the contents "This treatise is confined to the different methods of painting and decorating finished pieces of ware-that is, pieces which the potter has dismissed finally from his hands, the surfaces being, in different instances, glazed, semi-glazed, or unglazed. The materials to be used are enamel colors, bright and mat enamels, jewels, and metals." (Author). This is basically an explanatory book on the process by which works were made. There are eight pages with illustrated advertisements at the back. Frackelton was the first to use a gas-fired kiln for art pottery in the United States. Using the clay from Wisconsin she demonstrated how to create. Tried by Fire offers practical advice for how to design, glaze and fire a variety of shapes and patterns. It's a really wonderful book which has been republished in soft-cover, but the soft-cover does not do justice to this book. A clear mylar cover has been added to protect the covers.; Color Illustrations; 81/2 by 10; 139 pages.
