Hardbound. Red library cloth. xiv, 395 pp. 38 illustrations with tissue guards, 236 text illustrations. Explores the life and work of French painter and sculptor Jean-Louis Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891). Includes a substantial section of excerpts from his notebooks, to present the artist in his own words. Translated from the French by Lady Mary Loyd and Miss Florence Simmonds. An acceptable reading copy. This book got wet at one point and appears to have been professionally preserved, but there are ripples to the pages and faint dampstaining evident. It is tight and crisp, but this defect is unavoidable.
