The primary mission of the Pantex Plant is the assembly, disassembly, testing, and evaluation of nuclear weapons in support of the NNSA stockpile stewardship program. Pantex also performs research and development in conventional high explosives and serves as an interim storage site for plutonium pits removed from dismantled weapons. The facility is located on a 16,000 acre site 17 miles northeast of Amarillo, Texas. The plant is managed and operated for the United States Department of Energy by Consolidated Nuclear Security.
