Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. "First Edition" stated. No mention of second edition. This copy has NO dust jacket. Rancher Wayne Hage demonstrates and documents that private owners -- ranchers, miners, and others -- have established private property rights through possession and proper filings administered under state law to much of the Western land which those far away in the east identify as "public lands," and which the federal government does not own because it has never purchased them with the permission of the appropriate state legislature, as required under the federal Constitution. What is widely misunderstood in other locales is the way "split title" or "split estate" works in the arid west, where one party can own the water and grazing rights to a sizable acreage, while another party may file on and thus own the mining rights to the same land, which land will often still remain "public" in the sense that these owners of limited rights must still allow free access to hunters, etc. Hage was a rancher and historian of these topics, who fought the taking of his grazing rights by arrogant federal bureaucrats near Tonopah, Nevada, through the courts. After his death, his daughters won those lawsuits, vindicating his arguments & analysis, though of course the federal government never runs out of funds, or of other courts to which it can and will appeal any adverse ruling, world without end. 267 pp. including index. Reduced from $150.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. Jacket design by Northwoods Studio; author photo by C.J. Hadley, Range magazine (illustratore). 2nd Edition. Jacket "good plus" with a shallow triangular chip to top of rear panel. Inscribed & signed by author Hage to the title page. (PLEASE NOTE: The word "inscribed" -- for those in Westminster, California, who can't seem to figure this out -- means the author has written additional words to the recipient, sometimes of a personal nature, usually directly above his or her signature. Potential buyers who find this confusing and who may be more visually oriented may find it useful to examine our attached scans, which include one or more photographs of the inscribed page in question.) Not price clipped; original $14.95 price showing. "Second Edition" stated to copyright page, and Ron Arnold's "Editor's Introduction to the Second Edition" notes "many small but useful changes throughout the work," including an expanded Table of Contents, so this is a true second edition, not a mere second printing, albeit published only one year after the first. In addition to the fact the two editions bear different ISBNs, second edition appears to be most easily identified by a primarily green dust jacket, while our first edition copy has a brown dust jacket, though we're not sure that's universal. Free Enterprise Press, "a division of the Center for the Defense of Free Enterprise," clearly identified as publisher to book spine, DJ spine, title page, and copyright page. Note that some offerings will list as "publisher" Merrill Press, also of Bellevue, Washington -- which is indeed listed as the distributor. Some have told us they find this somewhat reorganized second edition more useful & definitive. 265 pp. Reduced from $500. Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. "First Edition" stated. No mention of second edition. NO dust jacket. Author Hage has hand-written a lengthy inscription to fellow property-rights advocate Jim Faulkner to the otherwise blank FFE. Wayne Hage demonstrates and documents that private owners -- ranchers, miners, and others -- have established private property rights through possession and proper filings administered under state law to much of the Western land which those far away in the east identify as "public lands," and which the federal government does not own because it has never purchased them with the permission of the appropriate state legislature, as required under the federal Constitution. (Albeit the federal lawyers will, of course, face the slight inconvenience of spending the rest of eternity in hell.) 267 pp. including index. Reduced from $320. Inscribed by Author(s).

PLEASE NOTE: Since today's mail carriers have been known to dump even insured parcels on front porches or on office hallway floors, or to leave them wedged in screen doors, whereupon the postal authorities have DECLINED to pay our insurance claim when such a parcel goes missing, sneering that such parcels were "delivered as addressed," we now ship all parcels valued at $90 or more "signature required," at our expense. Buyers are responsible to provide a secure mailing address, and should be on the lookout for a "notice of attempt to deliver," should no adult signer be available when the mailman calls. If such a notice is ignored, USPS will generally return our package to us after about 12 days. This signed copy now reduced from $310. Inscribed by Author(s).

Soft cover. Condizione: As New. No Jacket. Rear wrap painting "Stewards of the Range" by Jack N. Swanson, C.A. (illustratore). 3rd Edition. This is an unread/as new copy of the 1994 trade paperback Third Edition, dated "22 Mar 00," inscribed in blue ballpoint to a named couple "Helen and I thoroughly enjoyed our trip to New Zealand - Australia with you!" and signed "Wayne Hage." Author Hage demonstrates and documents that private owners -- ranchers, miners, and others -- have established private property rights through possession and proper filings administered under state law to much of the Western land which those far away in the East identify as "public lands," and which the federal government does not own because it has never purchased them with the permission of the appropriate state legislature, as required under the federal Constitution. Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1st Edition. "First Edition" stated. No mention of second edition. "Good-plus" dust jacket shows a closed inch-and-half tear to bottom of jacket rear panel, and a half-inch hole (sticker pull?) To jacket spine, impinging no type. Author Hage has inscribed to "Harold Steen / Thanks for your help in making this book possible" and signed to the front pastedown, where his signature is largely hidden under the jacket front flap, as was his habit. Harold K. "Pete" Steen (born 1935) was a forest historian, executive director of the Forest History Society, and author of "The U.S. Forest Service: A History" (Seattle: University of Washington Press.) He and his book merit four citations in the Index, here.
