Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. 390pp. 12mo, contemporary dark red half morocco, gilt, bubble grain cloth boards. Faded along top edge of boards, but a very nice copy. Martineau's correspondence with the 'phreno-mesmerist' who, she claimed, had cured her of a long and debilitating illness, 'one of the strangest books to carry the name of a reputable writer' (R.K. Webb, Harriet Martineau: a radical Victorian, 1960, p.293) and, in its way, a significant literary milestone. Besides the usual pseudo-scientific clap-trap and some entertaining stories of unexplained psychic phenomena, the book explicitly rejects orthodox religious belief and promotes an extreme form of 'atheistic naturalism'. Martineau anticipated the reaction: 'this book is, I believe, the greatest effort of courage I ever made.' Sure enough, Charlotte Brontë, for instance, called it 'the first exposition of avowed Atheism and Materialism I have ever read; the first unequivocal declaration of disbelief in the existence of a God or Future Life I have ever seen.' Others were similarly shocked, not least Martineau's brother James, who was not only personally upset but intellectually outraged. His savage notice of the work in the Prospective Review entirely destroyed their once close relationship: they never wrote to each other again.
