"The editorials that appear in this volume were written between 1883 and 1887, that is, when Hearn was between thirty-three and thirty-seven years old. Their language is lucid and he had to forego some of his pet notions of elaborate workmanship in the matter of verbal choice in writing for a newspaper, but Hearn the artist is always present." Hardcover. First edition. 196pp. Duodecimo [18.5 cm] Navy blue cloth covered boards with an orange ink stamped title on the spine. Very good. The spine ends and corners of the covers are gently bumped, and the boards are just a little bowed. There is a bookseller's tiny label on the front free endsheet. The pages are subtly yellowed. With a very good dust jacket. There is a very small open tear in the bottom edge of the rear panel, that measures under 1/2 of a centimeter wide by 1/2 of a centimeter deep. The jacket also has very minor soiling, and a few very tiny light stains. From the dust jacket- "The present volume contains probably the cream of Hearn's miscellaneous translations from the French, and both original and translation are of a highly literary character. No doubt the reader will welcome the fascinating short stories Hearn chose from the French authors he loved.".
