Unbumped spine head and tail, with sharp corners, but note that the front and rear boards are slightly bowed. Magnificent gilt illustration of a tree to the front board. Crisp gilt-stamping to the hubbed spine. A.E.G. Also with marbled pastedowns and FEPS. The text block is firmly bound in. With xxiv and 326 numbered pages, including a detailed and insightful introduction by the translator. With a pristine glassine guard between the half title page and the full title page. There are numerous line drawings interspersed throughout the text. Almost imperceptible age-toning to the pages. No page waviness noted. An impressively clean copy, inside and out. A Near Fine copy of a very handsome book. 1 lb. 15 oz. weight. José Hernández [1834-1886] was an Argentine journalist, poet, and politician best known as the author of the epic poem Martín Fierro. The first part of Martin Fierro, The Departure, was published in Buenos Aires in December of 1872. The second part, The Return, first appeared in 1879. Martin Fierro was a massive best seller in its day and ran through innumerable Spanish language editions. As to the book on offer, this English language version of the great national epic of the Argentine is a facsimile reproduction of the text and illustrations of the limited English edition of 450 copies, printed at the Shakespeare Head Press, Stratford-up-Avon, and published in 1935.
