Includes an early printing of a Oliver Wendell Holmes poem, "International Ode -- 'Our Fathers' Land'" (pages 19-20). The centerpiece of the book is an extremely detailed description of the ball in honor or the prince, who wore what, who danced with the prince, etc., also an anonymous poem of nine stanzas, "The Prince's Welcome" on page [6]. Currier & Tilton, p. 330. This printing not noted by BAL. Gift inscription on page [6] reads: "1870, April 26. Gift of Wm. Sumner Appleton, of Boston. (H. U. 1860)," Spine replaced, some general soiling to wrappers, small stain on rear wrapper, generally a very good copy. In a buckram folding case with inner marbled paper and small leather spine label. A complete run of a rare Harvard undergraduate literary magazine that contains 22 poems by Oliver Wendell Holmes, one of his first substantial contributions to a publication of any kind. 15 of the poems were not reprinted again until 1975. The other contributions include essays, sketches, poetry and reviews by a host of Harvard students, including Epes Sargent and John Lothrop Motley.
