The senior author took command of the research ship Elie Monnier in March 1949. The man he replaced was Jacques-Yves Cousteau. In February of 19545 the two authors took their experimental craft the FRNS 3 bathyscaphe to a depth of 4050 metres in waters off Dakar. Their story is detailed in these pages - includes a section of b/w photographs and 2 internal diagrams of `sphere' layout.
