Decorative Cloth. Condizione: Good +. No Jacket. Shakespeare: His Life, Art, and Characters(With An Historical Sketch of the Origin and Growth of the Drama in England), Volume I, by The Rev. H.N. Hudson, was published by Ginn & Heath in 1879. Not an ex-library copy, this 474-page, 132-year-old offering is in G+ condition. One would not suspect by looking at/handling it that this is a 132-year-old book. It is physically firm/sound, although the pages of text, as well as its endpapers front and back have yellowed somewhat, a previous owner has signed and dated the center third of the front loose end page, and there is some webbing seen along the length between pages 284-285. Featuring a Contents page, this volume is presented in five parts. It commences with a 46-page, detailed, biographical sketch of William Shakespeare(1564-1616). Part II , "Origin and Growth of the Drama in England", explores the development and importance of miracle-plays, moral-plays, and comedy and tragedy. Part III identifies and discusses literary contributions of some of Shakespeare's contemporaries, such as George Peele, Robert Greene, Christopher Marlowe, John Lily, and Thomas Lodge. Part IV, "Shakespeare's Art", explores and discusses such specific aspects as nature and use of art; principles of art; dramatic composition; characterization; humor; style; and, finally, moral spirit. Part V, in conclusion, studies and analyzes Shakespeare's characters, gleaning examples from ten of his best known plays, among them "A Midsummer-Night's Dream", "The Merchant of Venice", "As You Like It", "All's Well That Ends Well", "The Tempest", and "Much Ado About Nothing". If you are a student of the Immortal Bard, Reader, or perhaps a teacher in search of some 132-year-old new ideas, try this offering on for size. Thank you very much!!.
