Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1st Edition. 256 pages with frontispiece, appendixes, Bibliography and index. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and cover in original pictorial jacket. From the library of Fred Hall. First edition. The Conquest of Chile is a period in Chilean historiography that starts with the arrival of Pedro de Valdivia to Chile in 1541 and ends with the death of Martín García Óñez de Loyola in the Battle of Curalaba in 1598, and the destruction of the Seven Cities in 1598 1604 in the Araucanía region. This was the period of Spanish conquest of territories, founding of cities, establishment of the Captaincy General of Chile, and defeats ending its further colonial expansion southwards. The Arauco War continued, and the Spanish were never able to recover their short control in Araucanía south of the Bío Bío River. Frederic Arthur Holden Hall (1915-1972) was Edward E. Ayer Bibliographer for Iberian Books and Curator of the William B. Greenlee Collection of The Newberry Library. Frederick A. H. Hall was a dedicated librarian, whose deep scholarship was subordinated to the assistance of other scholars in the area of Luso-Brazilian culture. He attended the University of Chicago for one year and then the University of Michigan, where he received his A.B. and was subsequently awarded a fellowship for study and research in Brazil. What had been intended as a six months stay lengthened into nine years, during which he developed a deep knowledge of Brazilian life and letters, as well as a life-long love of the country and its people. On his return to the United States he attended library school at the University of Michigan and, on graduation, was hired by the Newberry as a reference librarian in 1955. His particular talents and qualifications quickly led to his transfer to the Ayer Collection, where he served as assistant to Dr. Ruth Lapham Butler until her retirement and succeeded her as Curator of the Greenlee Collection. Condition: Hall's extensive marginalia and notes throughout and name to front paste down, corners and spine extremities rubbed, underlining. Jacket with spine ends chipped, closed edge tears with chips else a good copy in like jacket.
