Prima edizione
xviii, 429 pp. 8vo, publisher's cloth in dust jacket. First edition. Very good or better in a jacket lacking 1/2" at the top of the spine and 2-1/2" at the bottom of the spine. There is also a 1 x 3/4" chip at the left bottom corner of the back panel. Inscribed by Langston Hughes, "With my very great gratitude for your work on this volume," and by Arna Bontemps "with more of same" on the front free endpaper. The recipient, Nathaniel White, whose full name and address in pencil appears on the pastedown, is one of a number of people thanked by the editors in the printed Acknowledgements. Inscriptions by Hughes are relatively common; those by Bontemps are not.
