Cover soiled and corners bumped. Some pages discoloration/soiling and some page tears. Ex-library with usual markings and pocket. This is one of the First Book series. The author acknowledged the help with the manuscript provided by Captain Chester W. Nimitz, Jr. and Heinrich Heep. Captain (later Admiral Joseph B. Icenhower was the author. Joseph Bryan Icenhower (1913-1994) commanded a submarine during WWII. On 25 Oct 1944 USS Jallao (Lt.Cdr. J.B. Icenhower) torpedoed and sank the Japanese light cruiser Tama east of Luzon Strait. On 11 Aug 1945 USS Jallao (Lt.Cdr. J.B. Icenhower) torpedoed and sank the Japanese merchant cargo ship Teihoku Maru in the Sea of Japan. Mildred Waltrip (1911-2004) was an American artist and illustrator. Waltrip suffered from polio during her lifetime, and wore leg braces. She received her art education at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Waltrip took part in the Works Progress Administration's art program, completing the murals World Map and People and American Characters in 1938 at the Hatch Elementary School in Oak Park, Chicago. In 1995 the murals were removed, as they portrayed Africans stereotypically, "carrying spears, wearing loincloths and sporting prominent red lips," according to a Chicago Tribune article by Joanne von Alroth. The removed murals were placed in storage. By the mid 1950s she was illustrating children's books, including Molecules Today and Tomorrow and Research Adventures for Young Scientists. This provides a brief history of the submarine is included in this description of the vessel's unique features and operation. Also discusses nuclear submarines and their present and future potential. A submarine (or sub) is a watercraft capable of independent operation underwater. It differs from a submersible, which has more limited underwater capability. The term is also sometimes used historically or colloquially to refer to remotely operated vehicles and robots, as well as medium-sized or smaller vessels, such as the midget submarine and the wet sub. Submarines are referred to as boats rather than ships irrespective of their size. Submarines encompass a wide range of types and capabilities. They include small autonomous examples using A-Navigation and one- or two-person subs that operate for a few hours, to vessels that can remain submerged for six monthsâ "such as the Russian Typhoon class, the biggest submarines ever built. Submarines can work at greater depths than are survivable or practical for human divers. Franklin Watts (1904-1978) was the publisher of books for children and adults for more than 36 years. Mr. Watts was the founder of Franklin Watts Inc. of New York and of Franklin Watts Ltd. of London. He was president of the Franklin Book Corporation in New York City. He began his career with books in 1925 as a bookseller and as a department store book buyer. In 1932, he became a sales representative for a group of publishers. He founded a book publishing company under his own name in 1942. In 1957, he sold Franklin Watts Inc. to Grolier, the encyclopedia publisher, and worked for Grolier's new division. Retiring in 1969, he moved to London to establish Franklin Watts Ltd., a joint venture with Grolier. In 1976, he retired from that concern and returned to New York City to found the Franklin Book Corporation. Mr. Watts graduated from Boston University and was a member of the Publishers Lunch Club.
