Color illustrated paper-covered boards with red cloth back strip, and Ads on end papers. "John Erskine Clarke (1827-1920) was a British clergyman who issued the first parish magazine. He established several other religious publications and was responsible for founding churches schools and hospitals in Battersea. In 1866 he moved to St Andrew Derby and set to work with publisher William Macintosh to produce Chatterbox, a weekly paper for older children. Chatterbox was one of the most popular English publications for children. It was first published December 1, 1866. Unlike other best remembered English children's publications, Chatterbox was designed to appeal to boys and girls. Clarke conceived Chatterbox as a weekly paper for children, and was primarily a story annual in which the content varied over time. There were, however, puzzles, poems, interesting facts, and a variety of interesting activities. Chatterbox was lavishly illustrated, especially after the turn of the 20th century when the technology for lothographic printing improved." Size: Quarto. Book.

"I think 'The Emigrant's last Sunday at home' will do.I will get the picture from Capells - to which we resort to for such padding out. The Paris poem I return as it is not suited for any of my serials. I have a mass of material & it may be months before I can insert the poem.If you do not dislike writing to such pictures I might sometimes be able to send you 2 or 3 similar pictures to write little papers or verses for for Chatterbox or Prize".
