Es soll auch, wie wir hoffen, zur richtigen Beurteilung und Wertung dieser Mittler des musikahschen Ausdrucks beitragen. Gegenstand der Abhandlung werden hauptsächlich alte, aus der sogenannten klassischen Periode der Geigenbaukunst,und zwar aus Italien herrührende Instrumente sein. Diese Instrumente waren mehr als eineinhalb Jahrhunderte lang Gegenstand der Bewunderung, und es wurden für sie - was auch in die Waagschale fäUt, nicht selten phantastische Summen bezahlt. . Aber auch von anderen Gesichtspunkten aus kann ein illustriertes Buch wie dieses interessant und zweckmäßig zugleich sein. Es kann zeigen, wie ein Streichinstrument aussieht, das klanglich und der Form nach mit Recht als unerreicht gilt.
