Libro
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. Illustrated by A.B. Frost, J.B. Conde, and Frank Uerback (illustratore). Most date this title 1905 from the early magazine copyrights, but this heavy, jacketed G&D reprint is surely post-1920, and in fact we've seen it dated as late as 1949, which seems more likely. The anthropomorphic line illustrations -- apparently by J.M. Conde -- are excellent. Unfortunately, a fair number of the other illustrations here -- by both A.B. Frost and Frank Uerbeck -- seem to be third-generation reproductions of glossy plates from earlier editions, and those pieces of art have gone a bit gray, losing much of their original contrast. 295 pp. with (though this is unusual) NO publisher's ads other than for Ernest Thompson Seton's "Two Little Savages" (1903) to jacket rear flap, along with the 78 titles of "The Favorite Books of the Younger Generation" to jacket rear panel. Reduced from $105.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. A very attractive looking early printing (October 1905 second edition) of an American classic. Rich red cloth with gilt lettering, Top Edge is gilted and the fore edge is rough cut. The previous owner's name is neatly written on ffep; Annette Winchester Ranney who was possibly related to Mary Ranney the co founder of Pasadena's Westridge School. Of particular interest are two neatly glued in articles that were most likely both cut from the Pasadena newspaper, although only the second article references the Pasadena paper plus you can see its masthead in the background. The first article (glued on inside cover) is approximately 500 words and it s titled: Honoring Uncle Remus The second article is shorter and is glued in on the reverse side of the table of contents. It is much shorter and is titled: AB Frost, Famous Artist Arrives, to stay permanently---Celebrated illustrator and family are at Hotel Vista del Arroyo. Both of the articles are very neatly glued in, evidencing that Ms. Ranney was a collector and certainly an admirer of the great Georgia storyteller. These articles left corresponding faded area on the opposite facing page verifying that they were placed in the book at the time the articles appeared. Both are interesting articles but the Honoring Uncle Remus is one that you would have expected to have appeared at the time in Harris old newspaper, The Atlanta Constitution, not one in California. Other than Ms. Ranney s signature, the articles and their shadows, the interior is clean and crisp, held most likely in a collection. The front stamped pictorial featuring Bre r Rabbit is 95% complete only the very right side rubbed. The gilt lettering on front clear and bright. It has faded some on the spine but still visible and readable. There is minor wear at the extremities but otherwise it very good plus to near fine. Perfect for a collector of Pasadena history, Georgia and Joel Chandler Harris history as well as A.B. Frost, the book s primary illustrator.
