Slipcase lt.brwn.w/yellow&brwn.labels; slight rub&scuff. "Couched in vital, meaningful language the text is at once suitable for modern man and worthy of the written word of God.".
Hardcover. Condizione: FINE. Thick 8vo, xvi, 1547, 498 pp. + maps. Burgundy finished cloth, gilt spine lettering and 'JB' monogram to front cover, marbled endpapers and slipcase. Ex-parish with some lingering material from removed label, spine a bit sunned, very clean and sharp text in tight binding in clean, sound slipcase. English translation of La Bible de Jérusalem, first pubished in French fascicle by the Dominican Ecole Biblique et Archeologique in Jerusalem under the editorship of Roland de Vaux. Translation was made from the French with consultation of the ancient mss. Retinue of literary heavyweights on the translation page includes JRR Tolkien, who translated Jonah and consulted on Job's Englishing. The scholarly notes, though condensed from the original facsicule commentary, remain a copious and enlightened compendium of 20th century biblical scholarship. Following the Papal encyclical of 1943 which lifted restrictions on the use of ancient manuscripts in biblical interpretation and translation, The Jerusalem Bible was the first Catholic vernacular translation to be made from the ancient manuscripts independently of the Vulgate and given imprimatur. A landmark in translation and Catholic Biblical studies impossible to overestimate. Jack P. Lewis, *The English Bible from KJV to NIV: A History and Evaluation, 2nd Ed.* ; F.F. Bruce, *History of the Bible in English, 3rd Ed.*.
