Prima edizione
Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo. A handsome 1st American Edition of this influential 19th-century medical treatise. "Jones grew up in Scotland and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. From 1827 to 1829, he was an assistant to Robert Knox, a lecturer on anatomy at Edinburgh. Around Christmas of 1827, while working for Knox, he purchased a body from William Hare on Knox's behalf, paying ?7 10s to Hare. Jones thus became caught up in the scandal surrounding the notorious body-snatchers Burke and Hare, but was cleared by the investigating committee. After this, he went to Glasgow, where he worked with William Mackenzie. Jones contributed the anatomical drawings of sections of the eye that appeared in Mackenzie's classic treatise. "Jones travelled to Cork in 1835, and for a time he engaged in medical practice there, devoting himself chiefly to diseases of the eye and ear. In 1835, he made the discovery of the germinal vesicle in the mammalian ovum, and in 1837, described the origin of the chorion.[6] In 1837 he visited the principal universities of the Continent, and settled in London in the following year, where he set up practice as an oculist. In 1847, Jones examined a primitive ophthalmoscope devised by Charles Babbage, but found it of little value. In 1851, Jones was appointed Professor of Ophthalmic Medicine and Surgery at University College, London. He occupied this post for 30 years until the beginning of 1881, when medical problems forced him to retire to Ventnor. He stayed in Ventnor until his death in 1891." - Wiki 509pp. Black and white illustrations throughout with four engraved plates. Square tight binding. Titling in gilt to spine. Clean interior. Small repaired abrasion along lower edge of front board. An attractive and desirable piece, a handsome addition to any modern-day medical collection.

Libro Prima edizione
Med.-Chir. Trans., 36. - Published by the Medical and Chirurgical Society. London 1853, 8°, XLIII, (1), 496 pp., zahlr. Taf., orig. Leinenband. First Edition! Out of the profusion of literature of this period, the work of the English anatomist and physiologist Wharton Jones is outstanding. In a well outlined, clear and concise paper on the comparative blood pictures of representative vertebrates from the skate to man, Jones enumerated the forms of cells which he found. He was also a founder of the monophyletic school, for he considered all forms found in the blood to be stages in the development of the red cell. He outlines his classification as follows: First phase: Granule cell. coarsely granular stage, finely granular stage. Second phase: Nucleated cell. uncolored stage, colored stage. Third phase: Free cellaeform nucleus or red cell. In the first phase no nucleus is visible until acetic acid is added. Jones describes the appearance of several nuclei in these cells with acetic acid, but considers this an artefact. Clearly the first phase represents the granulocytes of the later classifications, eosinophiles and basophiles corresponding to the coarsely granular stage, and neutrophiles to the finely granular stage. The second phase represents the lymphocytes and monocytes. Jones says that he has not seen the nucleated cell, colored stage, in the human blood, but infers it from the fact that he has seen it in mammalian fetal blood and in the adult blood of the horse and the elephant.
