First Edition. Signed gift copy from New Yorker writer John McNulty and cartoonist Edmund Duffy to Abby Perelman, the daughter of the great American humorist, author, and screenwriter S.J. Perelman. Inscribed: Ò To Abby from John McNulty and Edmund Duffy.Ó Oversize pictorial book illustrated with 100 birds in full-color by Don Eckelberry. Very good slightly used copy with some minor edge wear and a hint of spotting to the cloth in a lightly dust soiled dust jacket with some tears and a few chips. John McNulty (1895 - 1956) was best known for his humorous New Yorker pieces sourced from a fictional Irish saloon frequented by highly quotable regulars on Third Avenue (the real-life CostelloÕs on East 44th Street). Edmund Duffy (1899 - 1962) worked as an editorial cartoonist for ÔThe Baltimore SunÕ who won the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning three times from 1931 to 1940. Sidney Joseph Perelman, popularly known as S. J. Perelman (1904 Ð 1979), was one of the most widely read literary icons of the Golden Age of American Humor. His New Yorker pieces, fiction, and collected essays are legendary for their biting wit and mastery of caricature and language. He was the brother-in-law of the writer Nathanael West with whom he shared a close relationship up until WestÕs death in a car accident in 1940 at age thirty-seven, and whose memory and literary reputation he devoted himself to maintaining.
