Innen Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt, bei den Abbildungen manchmal kleine Braunfleckchen, sonst tadellos. Gilbert Clarence Klingel (1908 1983) war Naturforscher , Bootsbauer, Abenteurer, Fotograf, Autor, Erfinder, Mitarbeiter der Baltimore Sun , zeitweise mit dem American Museum of Natural History in New York verbunden und Mitglied der Maryland Academy of Sciences und Kurator und Gründungsmitglied der Natural History Society of Maryland. Er ist vor allem für sein Buch über die Chesapeake Bay , The Bay , bekannt, das 1953 mit der John Burroughs Medal ausgezeichnet wurde. Klingel wurde 1908 geboren und baute sein erstes Boot, als er 20 Jahre alt war. Anfang 1930 überwachte Klingel in Conley's Boat Yard am Town Creek in Oxford, MD , den Holzbau einer Nachbildung von SPRAY , der runden Schaluppe (die schließlich zu einer Jolle umgebaut wurde). mit der Joshua Slocum 1898 als erster Mensch allein um die Welt segelte. Klingel hatte zuvor eine Forschungsreise nach Haiti organisiert , um dort die Lebensgeschichte der Reptilien zu studieren, und seine Entdeckungen mit dem American Museum of Natural History geteilt. Mit seinem Segelgefährten W. Wallace Coleman (1907 1962) schiffte sich Klingel Ende November 1930 in Maryland zu einer geplanten 18-monatigen Reise nach Westindien ein. Zerschlagen und erschöpft von einem Sturm und unfähig, den Längengrad aufgrund eines kaputten Marinechronometers zu bestimmen , verrechneten sie die Strömung und erlitten am 10. Dezember 1930 auf der Insel Inagua , der südlichsten und zweitgrößten Insel der Bahamas , Schiffbruch. Obwohl die meisten seiner Instrumente verloren gingen, beschloss Klingel dennoch zu bleiben, Fotos mit seinen geborgenen Kameras zu machen und die Insel zu erkunden. Dieses Abenteuer wurde in seinem ersten Buch Inagua (auch mit dem Titel The Ocean Island ) veröffentlicht, einer Reiseerinnerung und einer naturkundlichen Übersicht über die Insel, einschließlich detaillierter Bilder von Flora und Fauna .
