Softcover. Condizione: Good. Immediate dispatch from Somerset. Nice older book in good condition. Pages in good condition. Some marking and wear due to age. No notes or highlighting. See images. Fantastic book. About the book >.>.> Hell's Highway as a historical work will make you feel as if you were there! My first encounter with the book was on an airplane, on the way to Holland in September of 1988, when George Koskimaki asked me to read a chapter of his original manuscript. After one chapter I was addicted. I wanted to read one more chapter, and then one more. My first reading of Hell's Highway was disjointed because chapters arrived singly and in small multiples, until I had the whole book. I have read Hell's Highway twice in its complete form and have reached the conclusion that it is the best story of a military action I have read. George Koskimaki is a master at weaving the individual stories of the airborne soldiers with personal accounts of Dutch civilians to produce a story that could not be improved by the embellishments of a writer of fiction. This is high adventure that could not be imagined. It is told by those who experienced the airborne assault into Holland, kept the highway open for.

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 3rd Edition. Fine condition forest green cloth boards with gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition photographic dust jacket. Includes Dedication; Praise for D-Day with The Screaming Eagles; Foreword by Gerald J. Higgins, Major General U.S. Army Ret.; Introduction by George E. Koskimaki, December 22, 1969; Contributors; Acknowledgments; Bibliography and Index. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs and maps. Signed by the author in black pen on the second front half title page as follows: "From one trooper to another! George E. Koskimaki." (see photographs). "Professional historians have recorded the actions of D-Day but here is an account of the airborne actions as described by the actual participants in eye-witness narration. George E. Koskimaki, who served as radioman for General Maxwell D. Taylor in both the Normandy and Holland airborne campaigns has pieced together the stories of 518 former paratroopers and glidermen of the 101st Airborne Division. Participants range from division command personnel to regimental, battalion, company and battery commanders to chaplains, surgeons, enlisted medics, platoon sergeants, squad leaders and the rough, tough troopers who adapted quickly to fighting in mixed, unfamiliar goups after a badly scattered drop and yet managed to gain the objectives in the hedgerow country of Normandy. The foreword is written by Major General Gerald J. Higgins (Ret), who served as chief-of-staff for the Screaming Eagle Division. He wrote: "George Koskimaki has compiled a truly amazing compendium of the activities and experiences of hundreds of individual members of the 101st Airborne Division on the occasion of their D-Day Normandy invasion. The series of events leading up to the loading of the planes, the emotions of the paratroopers en-route and the reactions of the individuals during the period shortly after landing are vividly recorded and will certainly bring home moments of nostalgia to all those who participated in the operation . the overall editing is highly commendable - to tell it as it was and yet avoid a multiplicity of duplicated recitals could only have been accomplished by painstaking attention on the part of a dedicated writer." From a World War II historian, Roger Bell of London, "What a breath of fresh air it was to read the new facts presented! This must rank as one of the finest and most important contributions to the history of airborne warfare." The feats of the airborne soldiers may soon fade into legend as the helicopter replaces the parachute and glider, but while the story can be told, let these exploits of the sky invaders of Hitler's Fortress Europa become part of the annals of history." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Signed by Author(s).
