The character of Dunn appears to be based on that of John Sadleir, the Irish politician and financier. Sadleir, who eventually fell into ruin and committed suicide on Hampstead Heath, also provides the basis for the character of Mr. Merdle in Dickens' Little Dorrit. Artist Hablot Knight Browne, known as "Phiz," is best remembered for illustrating the novels of Dickens.

Generously illustrated with 26 steel engravings and 9 wood engravings, all by "Phiz" (Halbot Knight Browne), as well as an engraved portrait of the author on the frontispiece with his facsimile signature. First published in 12 monthly parts in 1842-43, this is the first edition in book form, containing the complete Jack Hinton novel. Other novels were subequently published in the "Our Mess" series, named after other members of the fictional military "Mess" devised by Lever. The author, Charles James Lever (1806 1872) was an Irish novelist and raconteur, whose novels, according to Anthony Trollope, were just like his conversation. Hablot Knight Browne (1815-1882) was an English illustrator, etcher, and painter best known as the illustrator of the novels of Charles Dickens, Charles Lever, and Harrison Ainsworth, under the pen-name of Phiz. Former owner's signature on half-title, old bibliographic note ("First Edition") in pencil on fep, edges and covers moderately rubbed and worn, interior hinges starting, all illustrations moderately foxed, else fine; otherwise unmarked, tight, square, and clean.
