Prima edizione Copia autografata
First edition, inscribed by Liebow on the bound-in front wrapper, "Inscribed, with pleasure, for Russell Miller, Averill Liebow, June 1954", the inscription just running off the fore edge. Miller was a medical student at Yale, graduating in 1955, where Liebow taught as Professor of Pathology from 1951 until 1968. This seminal study is now uncommon, with 14 copies traced institutionally. The work, which was issued by the Joint Commission for the Investigation of the Effects of the Atomic Bomb in Japan, provides a detailed examination of the microscopic, internal, and external effects on humans caused by the bombs at Hiroshima, 6 August 1945, and Nagasaki, 9 August 1945. Liebow (1911-1978) was a member of the commission and reached Hiroshima on 12 October. Liebow remained in Hiroshima for the following four months surveying the effects of bombings. His extensive shorthand diaries are now held at his archive at the Medical Historical Archive at Yale. This first edition is offprinted from the American Journal of Pathology Vol. XXV, No. 5. Octavo (246 x 168 mm). Contemporary green buckram, spine lettered in gilt, original green card front wrapper, printed in black, bound in. With 45 pages of glossy photograph reproductions. Spine sunned, gilt faded, minor rubbing to board edges, contents clean and fresh: a very good copy.
